Everyone seems to be getting a flat screen TV nowadays, and what’s a flat screen LCD or plasma is you can’t mount it on the wall? You may need a few tips and tricks along the way - so that’s what Today’s expert Monroe D. Stevens is going to talk to us about!

Tips For Mounting a Flat Screen TV
By Monroe D. Stevens

A variety of flat screen TV wall mounts are available at home appliance stores or on the Internet. Wall mounts are important accessories as they can really enhance your TV-viewing experience. If you get an incompatible TV wall mount or you fix one incorrectly, you may not have the best viewing experience and you don’t want to risk having your TV fall onto the floor and breaking. The following are some easy tips that would help you find or fix a wall mount in the best possible manner.

Check Out the Specs

Before rushing to the store or clicking on the “add to shopping cart” button, make sure that you understand the wall-mount specifications of your TV. They’re usually mentioned in the user manual of your flat screen TV. The specifications of the TV wall mount that you purchase or have should also be read thoroughly. The wall mount needs to match the screen size of the television.

Normally, a particular mount is ideal for holding a TV within a specified range of screen size. For example, some wall mounts have a 26-50 screen size, which means these mounts are ideal for holding a TV screen within the size range of 26 inches to 50 inches. Another aspect is the weight capacity. Make sure that the weight capacity is more than the actual weight of the TV.

Flat TV screens come with pre-drilled holes on the back. Caps made of plastic or some other material sometimes cover these holes behind the TV. You have to remove these caps before mounting the TV. Use a screwdriver or a small knife to remove the caps. An important aspect here is the distance between the holes. These will be located at the corners of either a square or a rectangle. The TV wall mount should have mounting holes at the same distance.

You can get an idea about this distance from the VESA (Video Electronics Standard Association) standard. For example, VESA 75 means the holes are at the corners of a square with a side 75 mm long. VESA 100/200 means the holes are at the corners of a rectangle with the sides 100 mm and 200 mm long. Check the VESA rating of your flat screen TV and make sure that the VESA standard of the wall mount is compatible with that of the TV.

Finding The Best Spot on the Wall

Aesthetic and interior decoration plays a part in finding the right place for mounting the flat screen TV. However, one has to give more importance to the viewing angle. You can see the best picture when the TV screen is at a direct, head-on angle. A sideways angle often spoils the picture clarity.

The height of the mount is also an important factor. The TV should be placed at a spot slightly higher than eye level. You can find an ideal location after some trial and error. Also, when finding a spot on the wall to place the flat wall mounts, you should make sure that it’s devoid of any kind of glare. That would be bad.

Take your time and you’ll be sure to be proud of your work. You’ll enjoy watching shows, movies and sports in no time. Good luck with your project!

Since so many people are buying flat screens the traditional entertainment center has practically been done away with. Many people mount their flat screen on the wall, and “floating shelves” are the perfect complement! Today’s expert, Penny Day, is going to talk to us about installing floating shelves!

How to Put Up a Floating Shelf
By Penny Day

If you thought putting up shelves was a job best left to the professionals, think again - floating shelves can be fitted easily on a Saturday morning or afternoon, giving you plenty of stylish storage space.

You will need

• Retractable tape measure

• Electronic wire and pipe detector

• Spirit level

• Drill

• Screws or fittings: 50mm screws and plastic Rawlplugs if fixing to concrete or brick, 40mm screws if fixing to wooden joists, or 65mm metal plasterboard anchors is fixing to plasterboard.

• Hammer (to push in Rawlplugs)

• Screwdriver

Assemble Your Shelf

Step 1: First, decide how many shelves you would like, and how high you want them. If you want to put storage baskets underneath, the lowest shelf should be no less than 90cm from the floor, and the space between each shelf should be at least 30cm, which will fit most books.

Step 2: Using an electronic detector, check that the area of wall where you plan to hang the shelves is free from hidden pipes or cables.

Step 3: Place your first bracket against the wall, using a spirit level to make sure it’s level. Mark the fixing-hole positions with a pencil.

Step 4: Using the pencil marks, drill holes into the wall. Our floating shelves required five screws, which weren’t included with the shelf - check when you buy. Always choose screws or fittings that are suitable for the material of your wall (see previous page). Screw the bracket into place.

Step 5: Slide the shelf onto the bracket to check that it’s level (use the spirit level to make sure). Once you’re happy with the position of this shelf and the way it looks, slide it back off the bracket so that you can position the rest of the brackets.

Step 6: Once all the brackets are in place, slide the shelves on and fix into place with the small screws provided with the shelf, using the pre-drilled holes on the underside of each shelf.

Stylist’s tip

Line your shelves up for a formal finish, or stagger them for a contemporary look

Pet Doors are a great way to make sure your pets get outside on a timely basis, but that can also add to your heating and cooling costs. Make sure to install an insulated pet door to you don’t have this problem. J. Reilley is today’s expert - and he’s going to tell us how to do just that!

Insulated Pet Doors
By J Reilley

Insulated pet doors are weather proof and can keep your energy bills manageable. How? They have dual flaps with a cushion of air in between them. It works like the vestibule or foyer in older houses, only a lot smaller of course. It has the outside flap that leads to the inside flap and blocks the wind and the weather. So it only lets in what you want - your pet, not the heat of summer or blistery cold of winter.

Insulated pet doors can be designed to fit in a wall or a door or a window. Because of their sturdy construction, they are a benefit year round. In the autumn, these doors keep the wind and the leaves from blowing through and ending up all over your floor. It also keeps out that high pitched howling sound that can unnerve anyone around Halloween, or any other time of the year. They keep out those harsh winter drafts that can suck the heat right our of your house and cause your furnace to work overtime. During the Spring, insulated pet doors keep the allergens out. You’ll be surprised how much less you have to dust your furniture. In the summer they help keep the cool air in and the heat of the sun out. All the while, your pets can come and go when you want them to, season after season. What could be better?

Insulated pet doors provide security because you can lock them when you are away. Many a burglar has snuck through an unprotected pet door designed for a larger dog. Another security advantage is when your pet uses the dual flap system, it reduces the likelihood of a flap getting stuck open, letting all sorts of things in you’d rather not have in your house.

It may take a little while for your pet to get the hang of going through two doors, especially if they have only used the single floppy type of the older pet doors. This may especially be true for cats. But a little coaxing and they will get the idea in no time. You don’t have to worry. There is not enough space between the two flaps for them to feel they are getting trapped. You won’t have a panicky pet.

It is best to purchase an insulated pet door that has flexible flaps as opposed to the harder stiff type that can be harsh feeling on their backs. Everyone likes a back scratch now and then, but that is no way for your pet to get one. A flexible vinyl is the best way to go. More and more models are manufacturing the flaps with this softer but still weather resistant material.

So, it would be a wise move to install an insulated pet door. The savings in energy bills could likely pay for it in one year. That way you won’t have a hole in your door or wall sucking out the comfortable air. You also won’t have a huge hole in your wallet every time the energy bill comes in the mail.

Even though vinyl siding has been around for years, there are still so many homes out there that have wooden shingles, slats, stucco, and who knows what else. If you don’t have vinyl siding and proper insulation on your home than you are throwing hundreds of not thousands of dollars out the window each and every year in heating and cooling costs! Today’s expert, Kelli D. Smith, will tells about the benefits of vinyl siding.

The Benefits of Vinyl Siding
By Kelli D Smith

In today’s weak housing market, many people are taking this opportunity to reinvest in their existing homes. That’s why, in many cities around the country, small, relatively inexpensive home improvements are getting big returns. Topping the list for small improvements with big results? Vinyl siding.

In fact, the National Association of Realtors says that home improvements that boost curb appeal are the number one way to recoup your money at the selling table.

Why is Vinyl Siding So Hot?

Vinyl siding offers numerous benefits to homeowners that make it a worthwhile investment:

Unlike wood, vinyl siding never needs painting.

It’s generally much cheaper than wood, and it’s easier and less time-consuming to install than wood.

Vinyl offers a variety of looks and colors, making it appropriate for many building styles.

Vinyl requires significantly less maintenance than wood.

Vinyl is more moisture- and wind-resistant than wood. This makes it ideal for a variety of different climates - some are even made to withstand hurricane-force winds!

Vinyl usually doesn’t need to be painted - but it can be, with latex paint.

Certain types of vinyl may even help to make your home more energy efficient.

A Word of Advice

Vinyl siding is incredibly versatile, but it’s not for every project. Certain historical restoration projects are not well-suited to vinyl. Also, although it requires little maintenance, it’s not entirely maintenance-free; it should be washed periodically, but not with a power-washer, which can drive water behind the panels. Finally, it must be installed properly in order to provide the full range of benefits; it’s best to have a properly trained contractor install the siding.

Explore this site to learn more about whether vinyl siding is right for your home.

It’s hard to find a good general contractor for a job, and sometimes home improvements are a bit more than you can handle on your own. Our expert today, David H. Hobson is going to tell us how you can find one that you can count on when you need him most!

How to Find General Contractors You Can Rely On
By David H Hobson

Despite the countless DIY guides on the internet today, you just can’t do everything by yourself. There are some problems that will require the skilled hands of professionals - professionals who have trained for years to perfect their crafts.

The problem is, finding such professionals can actually be as difficult as fixing the problems by yourself.
Sure, a lot of general contractors are listed on the Yellow Pages. A number of them even advertise their services on local dailies. And a few even maintain their own websites which you can easily access on the internet.

These general contractors are easy to contact.

But how can you be sure that you’re actually getting in touch with a trustworthy contractor? Alas, that my friend, is the question!

Before hiring a plumber, a carpenter, a painter, a roofer, a mechanic, a remodeler, an electrician or a general utilities man, observe the following steps:

1. Ask questions. Not only will your questions provide enlightenment on the needs you want to be fulfilled, the contractor’s answers will also allow you to scrutinize how much he knows about the task at hand. You won’t want to hire an inept worker. You will want a contractor you can entrust with your house. And only by asking relevant questions will you discover if he has what it takes to meet your expectations.

2. Conduct your due diligence. Log online and check out the Better Business Bureau to see if there’s a complaint filed against him. Look for his listing under your state’s board of contractors to determine if he’s legit and if he has a history of worthy service. Look for referrals that will testify to the good work he is capable of providing.

3. Protect your rights by preparing a written agreement the contractor has to sign. This written agreement should bind the contractor to indemnify your for damages that may be caused by his ineptitude, negligence or carelessness. If he is the professional that he claims he is, he will not take this personally. Rather, he will take it as a challenge to prove your fears as baseless.

4. Consult with an established listing of reputable, reliable and established general contractors. There are such lists on the internet.

It may sound melodramatic, but it’s true - when you hire a contractor, you won’t only hire him to repair your house, you will also hire him to repair a part of your life and a part of your dream.

Hence, it is critical that you find a contractor you can truly trust!

If your looking for a General Contractor then come and visit our website we have many reliable contractors available.

Many people love doing their own home improvements and there are entire channels such as HGTV, Planet Green, and DIY that are devoted to this subject. There are home improvement reality shows that cover all types of topics, from learning how to clean out the clutter to laying hardwood floors to staging your house for sale.

Many believe the home improvement craze started with the PBS series “This Old House.” The show started in 1979 and focused on renovating older houses. The original host was Bob Villa. Since leaving the show in 1989, Villa has written a number of books about home improvement and even has his own line of tools on the Home Shopping Network.

“Trading Spaces” is one of the most popular home improvement reality shows. Although recently canceled, the show saw a run of eight successful seasons. The theme of the show was simple - neighbors would redecorate one room in each other’s house. The team had two days (three days in later seasons) and a budget of $1,000 ($2,000 in later seasons) along with the help of a designer to redo the room. The other team was not allowed to enter their home while the renovations were being done and had no say so as to what was changed. Many credit the fun show with sparking a renewed interest in home improvement in the U.S.

HGTV’s “24 Hour Design” is another show that concentrates on redoing a single room. However, on this show, the homeowners have some input. In a single day, a crew of a designer, design assistant, and carpenter take $2,000 and make changes to the room in one day.

“Clean House,” on the Style Network, offers a different type of home improvement for people - decluttering. Hostess Niecy Nash brings her crew in to help people with the process of letting go of the stuff they don’t need. After a huge yard sale, other home improvement professionals give the home new look by matching up to $1,000 of the yard sale proceeds. HGTV’s “Mission: Organization” also focuses on decluttering. It shows homeowners how to maximize the space they have through reorganization and redesign.

The DIY network offers a wide variety of home renovation shows including “10 Things You Must Know,” “Kitchen Impossible,” “Create Your Baby’s Nursery,” “Creative Wall Coverings,” “Desperate Landscapes,” and “Home Maintenance.” Almost any time of the day or night, a homeowner can turn on the DIY network and find some type of show to help with renovations.

There are plenty of shows for people who are looking to spruce up their homes for sale. “Designed to Sell” gives expert designers a $2,000 budget and use of a professional carpenter to fix up a house with the hopes that it will receive the maximum offer from a buyer. “Sell This House” gives home sellers a unique view into what potential buyers like and don’t like about the home. The team videotapes the comments of people looking at the house, and then shows the footage to the homeowners. Normally the house has been on the market for a long time and the homeowner doesn’t know why. Tanya and Roger, with the help of the homeowners, start making renovations and staging the home to help it sell. The potential buyers are then brought back in to see what has been changed and their comments are usually much more positive.

Home renovation can often be challenging, but rewarding. Those who want to spruce up their home just for their own enjoyment or to sell their house have no shortage of home improvement shows to guide them through the process.

Owning a house is a full time job! Sometimes it feels like if you don’t have one problem, then you have another! Having a leak in your roof is one of the most common household problems, but fortunately, just because there is a leak does not necessarily mean that you have a huge, expensive problem on your hands. Especially if you were able to identify the leak early, repairing your roof can be simple and cheap! But don’t put off doing it, because if you do, you may experience a variety of larger problems, such as mold, mildew, and even damaged foundations.

So first of all, try to find exactly where the roof is leaking. If some of your ceiling tiles are wet, then you should be able to trace the leak backwards from the tile to the roof. Certain areas of your roof will be most prone to leaks. So if the location of the leak is not obvious, you will want to check the following areas first; low spots in the roof, areas around the chimney and skylights, areas where shingles are missing, and vent flashings from plumbing, the furnace, or wall steps.

Once you figure out exactly where the leak is, you should move things such as televisions and furniture that are underneath the leaky area to keep them from getting damaged. You may discover that a recent windstorm took some shingles off the roof. Winds gusting from 50 to 75 miles per hour can damage your roof.

If this is the problem, all you have to do is replace the missing shingles.
Another common cause of leaking roofs is flashings that are not functioning correctly. Roof flashings are thigs that keep water out of areas of the roof where there are protrusions such as pipes and chimneys. If the junction between the flashings and the rest of the roof are not watertight, you can get leaks in the roof.

Flashings can often cause leaks in the roof if they are not installed correctly, and flashings are the most susceptible part of your roof. Many early roof problems are actually just flashing problems. If you repair the flashings, it will usually fix any other problem you are having with a leaky roof.

Finally, if you cannot find the source of the problem yourself, you might want to consider hiring a roofing professional to keep your home from being subject to further water damage.
